Split is the second largest city in Croatia with a population of more than 200,000. It is by far the largest along the Dalmatian coast with a busy ferry port and with a greater emphasis on manufacturing than elsewhere. The city occupies a broad peninsula, jutting out from the mainland and terminating in the green hilltop park of Marjan. The old town and Diocletian’s Palace lie on the south-facing side. The city’s urban sprawl stretches north and east of here, while the northern shore of the peninsula and the area opposite its base are heavily industrialized. Recently a number of large hotel complexes have developed along the coast to the east of the old town.
