Why did BMO introduce True Name?

For our customers whose legal names may not reflect their true identity, a credit card showing their legal name can be a source of sensitivity. Research shows one-third of individuals whose ID has a name that doesn’t match their gender presentation experience harassment and denial of service. True Name is a powerful way we can alleviate a source of anxiety for our customers and deliver banking solutions that meet our customers’ needs.

How does True Name affect my account’s security? Does it increase the risk of fraud?

We’re continuing to uphold our same, high standards to validate our customers’ identities and protect account access. True name credit cards continue to offer all security that come standard with our card products.

I haven’t legally changed my name. What happens if a merchant asks for my ID?

If a merchant insists on matching the name on your credit card with a government-issued ID, you can ask them to call the number on the back of your card. We’ll verify the legal name on the account that the credit card is associated with.

Can I replace my current card with a True Name card?

Yes – if the first name on your credit card doesn’t reflect your preferred name, we’ll replace your card with a True Name card! For questions about getting your True Name on your BMO credit card, please call the number on the back of your card. Credit cards can also be requested by visiting a BMO branch.

What signature should I use with my True Name card?

You should sign the back of your card with the same name shown on the front. Most transactions no longer require signatures, but if you do need to sign for a transaction, use the name on the front of your card.

Your last name must be the last name that appears on your account. Use only alpha characters (i.e. cannot include numbers, special characters). Apostrophes and hyphens are allowed. Avoid using fictitious, humorous, or profane names. True Name is not available for BMO commercial or corporate credit cards.
