How to negotiate an offer

Who’s involved: You, your real estate agent, the seller, and the seller’s agent.

What happens: Once your real estate agent has given you your contract to purchase, the seller can decide to:

  • Accept your offer
  • Reject it
  • Make a counteroffer

To counter your offer, the seller amends and returns the contract to the agent. You may accept, reject or counter again. The process continues until the offer is accepted or rejected. If accepted, both parties sign and proceed to the next steps, which include satisfying contract conditions.
