Travel tips for keeping your personal and business info safe
Need to travel for a business trip? Keep these tips in mind to make sure confidential information you carry with you is safe in transit.

Travelling for work can include a lot of waiting around – especially if you’re flying. It makes sense you’d want to make the most of that time and get some work done. But whether you’re at the airport lounge or on the plane itself, remember to keep your company information private.
Here are a few things to keep in mind before your next trip – business or personal – to protect yourself.
Before you go
- Avoid taking confidential or highly sensitive information unless absolutely needed; if you must bring paper documents, put them in your carry-on luggage
- Back-up and remove unneeded sensitive information from devices
- Ensure antivirus, security patches and firewall are enabled and up-to-date
- Clear your browser history and cache including saved usernames
- Delete saved or favourite sites that could expose your personal information or browsing habits
- Ensure your laptop and smartphone are charged enough that you can turn them on if airport security requests you to

Working while in the airport
- Only use the official airport WiFi network and if your company has a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service, connect with that immediately to prevent other users from trying to access your devices
- Keep your laptop, smartphone and belongings in sight at all times
Working while in transit
- Only access what you need and shield documents from other’s view
- Use a privacy filter on your laptop to prevent others from seeing your screen
- Never talk about business (even with coworkers) to avoid being overheard
- Ensure that you have all your documents, devices, equipment and belongings with you when exiting
If you travel frequently, it’s easy to think of the airport of your second office. Keep in mind you’re still in a very public place and should take a few precautions to ensure your info stays safe. Your company may have its own travel policies as well that you can check out before your next trip.
