How to use the BMO Canada to BMO U.S. Transfer

  1. Sign into BMO Digital Banking (Canada) and select Pay & transfer.  
  2. Select Account transfers. The Make a transfer tab will already be selected.
  3. Under the From account drop down list, select the BMO Canada U.S. dollar account you wish to transfer from.
  4. Under the To account drop down list, select the BMO U.S. account you wish to transfer funds to. If this is your first-time using cross-border transfer, select +ADD BMO U.S. ACCOUNT.
  5. Enter the amount in U.S. dollars you wish to transfer.
  6. Enter the reason for the transfer. Select Continue
  7.  Confirm the Amount, From account, To account, and Reason for the transfer. Once you are satisfied with these details, select Confirm Transfer

BMO Canada to BMO U.S. Transfer FAQs

  • The maximum amount is USD $25,000 per transaction, and you can initiate more than one transaction per day.

  • Transfers initiated to your BMO U.S. deposit account before 4 pm ET will be transferred within the same business day, provided it is not a weekend or a statutory holiday in Canada or the U.S. Any transfer submitted after 4 pm ET will be processed on the next business day. Please allow up to 1 business day for the transfer to show in your BMO U.S. deposit account.

  • Although there is no cost to you, a $50 processing fee is debited and credited back to your account at time of transfer. You must leave at least $50 in your BMO Canada U.S. dollar deposit account to cover this fee being debited. footnote 1 

  • You can check the status by signing into your BMO Digital Banking (U.S.) and viewing the transaction history of the BMO U.S. deposit account you transferred money to.

  • BMO offers several different ways to send money online to yourself or to another recipient like a family member or a friend. You can send money internationally by using BMO Canada to BMO U.S. transfer, BMO Global Money Transfer or Western Union®*. Within Canada, you can send money using Interac e-transfer®§. 1 While there is no fee for this service, a wire fee of USD $40 and Telecommunication charge of USD $10 will be debited from your BMO Canada U.S. dollar account and the fees will be refunded immediately. Ensure you have sufficient funds to cover the USD $50 fee along with the amount you wish to transfer to your BMO U.S. deposit account. Transfers to BMO U.S. deposit accounts before 4 p.m. ET will be completed within the same business day, provided it is not a weekend or a statutory holiday in Canada or the U.S. Any transfer submitted after 4 p.m. ET will be processed the next business day.  

Your BMO U.S. deposit account must also have been open for at least 1-2 business days to initiate a first-time transfer.
