Employee Programs

We engage with employees to help foster their awareness of our environmental efforts and initiatives, and to encourage them to get involved. Here are some of the ways we do it:

Internal website

Our intranet is the perfect place for two-way communication. We provide helpful energy and paper-saving tips and information about our programs, and create a forum for employees to exchange their views and share their accomplishments.

Internal email inquiries

Employees can email questions, comments and suggestions to the Environmental Sustainability Office.

Environmental Ambassadors

We have a growing number of employee volunteers known as Environmental Ambassadors throughout Canada and the U.S. These volunteers support the Environmental Sustainability Office by leading environmentally focused initiatives in their workplaces throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Environmentally Focused Training

BMO’s corporate orientation materials include our environmental sustainability message, ensuring that all new employees are aware of our commitment to the environment. Our Environmental Sustainability Office also conducts Lunch and Learns on environmental issues.

Employee Volunteer Days

We encourage volunteering and community involvement. BMO employees often volunteer for environmentally focused events such as community clean-ups and planting gardens in community green spaces. See Community Investment for more information.

Eyeglass/Cell Phone Recycling Program

We participate in recycling programs for eyeglasses and cell phones. Employees can collect old glasses and phones in their workplaces and then pass them on to our partner organizations. Eyeglasses are cleaned, repaired and distributed to individuals in need through a charitable organization, while cell phone parts are reused and recycled responsibly. These programs help keep waste out of landfill and reduce the use of resources.

Office Supply Exchange

Every year in Chicago, we hold an Office Supply Exchange where employees can swap supplies and equipment they no longer need with other departments. This allows us to get much-needed supplies at no extra cost while reducing waste and preventing usable items from going to landfill. Any remaining items from the exchange are donated to Chicago Public Schools. Over the past three years, we’ve saved approximately $35,000 through this program.

Earth Day

We’ve held a variety of events for Earth Day over the years, ranging from composting demonstrations to recycling education programs to educational demonstrations on computer energy savings.

Earth Hour

Since 2008, we have participated in the annual Earth Hour campaign to raise awareness about climate change. Major office spaces in Canada and the U.S. dim their lights for one hour in March to participate in this global call for action against climate change.

Electronics Recycling Events

This annual event provides free electronics recycling for BMO Harris Bank customers and the general public. Drop boxes are also positioned at select BMO Harris Bank locations. More than 19.5 tonnes of computers, cell phones, A/V equipment, scanners, printers, faxes and other electronics have been recycled through this event over the past three years.

Shred Events

Some of our branches host document-shredding events where customers and the general public can bring paper items to be securely destroyed. Shredded documents are then recycled and diverted from landfills. In addition to the environmental benefits, these events give us an opportunity to raise awareness about protecting sensitive or confidential information.

Supporting Local Environmental Efforts

We support a number of organizations that are dedicated to providing green spaces for families to enjoy, as well as environmental improvement and education, including:

  • Friends of the Chicago River
  • Chicago Botanic Garden – the Green Youth Farm
  • Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance
  • Joliet Park District
  • Openlands
  • Morton Arboretum
  • Windy City Harvest
  • ChicaGO Green Expo
  • Archaeology Southwest
